All adults and all children over the age of six months should wear sunscreen daily no matter how long their sun exposure is. Children under the age of six months should avoid all sun exposure. They should wear protective clothing, including a wide-brim hat, and remain in the shade.

There are some, such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG), that claim commercially available sunscreen should be avoided as the ingredients may damage the skin. However, there is little evidence to support such claims, and indeed, plenty of scientific evidence confirms the safety of these products for humans. Others advocate "all-natural" alternatives to sunscreen, such as mango butter or shea butter, which contains cinnamate. While these products may have mild sun-blocking properties, they are not nearly as effective as FDA-regulated sunscreen and should not be considered a safe alternative.
